Zayed University, Dubai Culture Celebrate First Graduating Cohort of Museum Management Programme
New UAE initiative equips Emirati students with curatorial, heritage and museum leadership skills through academic study and hands-on cultural sector training.
In a significant step towards building the UAE’s future cultural leadership, Zayed University and the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority have celebrated the successful completion of the first cohort of their Museum Management & Curatorial Studies Programme, a specialised initiative designed to prepare Emirati students for careers in museums, heritage institutions and the wider creative economy.
The final presentations and graduation ceremony were held at Zayed University’s Innovation Center in Dubai, bringing together senior representatives from both institutions, faculty members and students to mark the conclusion of the inaugural cycle.
The programme was launched as part of the strategic partnership announced between the two entities during the 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025), where both organisations committed to creating new professional pathways for Emirati youth in museum management and cultural leadership.
Bridging classroom learning with museum practice
Developed jointly by Zayed University’s Professional and Continuing Education division and its College of Arts and Creative Enterprises, in partnership with Dubai Culture, the programme was designed to combine academic instruction with practical immersion inside real museum environments.
Students undertook advanced seminars in museum administration, curatorial practice, heritage interpretation and cultural leadership, before moving into a 16-week internship across Dubai Culture’s museums. This was followed by an additional 12 weeks of on-ground engagement in cultural events, museum operations and public programming.
The curriculum mirrors Zayed University’s long-standing focus on heritage and museum studies, with the university already offering specialised training in museum operations, exhibition management and cultural preservation as part of its arts and heritage education ecosystem.
By the end of the programme, students were required to present final curatorial and museum management projects before a review panel comprising Dubai Culture representatives — giving them both academic validation and direct exposure to prospective employers.
Creating a talent pipeline for the UAE’s growing museum sector
University officials said the initiative reflects a broader national need to cultivate skilled Emirati professionals capable of leading museums, galleries and heritage institutions as the UAE continues to expand its investment in cultural infrastructure.
Speaking during the event, Zayed University President and Chief Executive Officer Professor Kevin Hall said the programme demonstrates how universities can work closely with government institutions to ensure students graduate with industry-ready knowledge and leadership capabilities.
Dubai Culture also highlighted that the partnership is intended not merely as a training course, but as a long-term workforce development model for the emirate’s museums and heritage destinations.
Several graduates from the first cohort are expected to transition directly into professional roles within Dubai Culture, underlining the programme’s success in building a practical bridge between higher education and employment.
Strengthening Emirati representation in cultural leadership
The initiative specifically targets Emirati students interested in museum management, curatorial studies, heritage preservation and cultural policymaking — sectors that are becoming increasingly important as the UAE positions itself as a global centre for arts, history and knowledge exchange.
The programme also aligns with wider national efforts to preserve Emirati identity while presenting local heritage in contemporary and internationally relevant formats.
Zayed University’s role in this mission is particularly notable, given its College of Arts and Creative Enterprises has been one of the country’s main academic incubators for students entering arts, design and cultural professions. The university today serves more than 22,000 graduates across undergraduate and postgraduate disciplines and remains one of the UAE’s flagship institutions for national talent development.
Plans underway for second cohort
Following the success of the inaugural graduating class, Zayed University and Dubai Culture are now exploring the continuation of the Museum Management & Curatorial Studies Programme with a second cohort, alongside discussions for a more formal long-term collaboration framework.
The move signals a growing recognition that the UAE’s museums of the future will require not only world-class buildings and collections, but also homegrown professionals equipped to interpret, preserve and lead the nation’s cultural narrative.
As the UAE’s cultural landscape rapidly matures, initiatives such as this are expected to play a central role in ensuring that Emirati talent remains at the forefront of shaping it.
