Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Saal.ai Unite to Accelerate UAE’s Sovereign AI Ambitions
New partnership, announced at Make it in the Emirates 2026, brings academia and industry together to advance research, talent development, and Agentic AI innovation in the UAE.
Abu Dhabi is strengthening its position as a regional hub for artificial intelligence, as Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Saal.ai announced a strategic collaboration aimed at advancing AI research, innovation, and talent development in the UAE.
The agreement was unveiled during Make it in the Emirates 2026, where both organisations formalised their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The collaboration focuses on sovereign AI, Agentic AI systems, and enterprise-scale artificial intelligence solutions, aligning closely with the UAE’s long-term vision for a knowledge-based, digitally empowered economy.
Under the MoU, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi will contribute its academic depth and research leadership, while Saal.ai brings its expertise in building sovereign AI infrastructure and advanced enterprise AI platforms developed in the UAE. Together, the partners aim to accelerate the development of locally grounded AI capabilities that support national priorities around digital sovereignty, governance, and technological independence.
The partnership is designed to move beyond theoretical research, creating a structured bridge between academia and industry. Joint initiatives will include applied AI research projects, innovation programmes, structured knowledge exchange, and talent development pathways that prepare students for emerging roles in AI-driven industries.
A key focus of the collaboration will be strengthening the UAE’s sovereign AI ecosystem—ensuring that critical models, data systems, and autonomous AI agents are developed, managed, and deployed within secure and locally governed frameworks.
The initiative also aligns with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s broader “Year of AI” agenda, which places strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and future-ready education. Through its Sorbonne Centre for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI), the university continues to expand its contribution to AI research and education, including specialised programmes such as its Bachelor’s in Mathematics with a focus on Data Science for Artificial Intelligence.
Speaking on the collaboration, Dr. Xavier Fresquet, Head of the Sorbonne Centre for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, highlighted the growing importance of academia–industry partnerships in shaping the next phase of AI development.
He noted that as sovereign and agentic AI systems become increasingly integrated across industries, universities must play a more active role not only in teaching these technologies but also in co-developing them with industry partners. He emphasised that such collaborations enable research outputs to evolve into secure, scalable, and sovereign technological systems that respond to real-world needs.
From the industry side, Vikraman Poduval, CEO of Saal.ai, described the partnership as a step forward in advancing the UAE’s sovereign AI ambitions. He underscored the importance of developing self-reliant AI systems built within the country, supported by Emirati talent and aligned with national priorities.
He added that the collaboration aims to translate cutting-edge AI research into practical applications, particularly in the field of Agentic AI—where systems are capable of autonomous decision-making and execution in complex environments.
Together, both institutions see the partnership as a long-term investment in the UAE’s innovation ecosystem. By combining academic research capabilities with real-world AI deployment expertise, the initiative is expected to support the development of trusted AI frameworks that are both globally competitive and locally governed.
As the UAE continues to position itself at the forefront of global AI development, this collaboration reflects a broader national shift: one that places equal emphasis on innovation, sovereignty, and the creation of a future-ready talent pipeline capable of leading the next wave of digital transformation.
