Back to School in the UAE Is Becoming More Digital

As more than 1.1 million students prepare to return to classrooms, families are looking beyond traditional school supplies and investing in technology, study spaces and tools that support learning at home.

The UAE’s back-to-school season is increasingly reflecting the country’s broader shift towards digital and future-focused education.

With more than 1.1 million students preparing to return to classrooms on August 31, families are getting ready for more than a new set of books, uniforms and stationery. Technology, home study environments and digital tools are becoming an increasingly important part of preparing for the academic year.

The shift comes as the UAE places greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, technology, innovation and future-ready skills across education.

For many families, that means reassessing how children learn outside the classroom as well as what they need inside it. Dedicated study areas, connected devices, charging solutions and computers are increasingly becoming part of the home learning environment.

The new back-to-school checklist

Back-to-school preparation has traditionally centred on school uniforms, bags, stationery and other classroom essentials. But the growing role of digital learning is expanding that checklist.

According to AliExpress, which is tracking consumer demand ahead of its Back-to-School Sale, families are showing interest in products spanning technology, home organisation, mobility and sports.

Technology categories include mini PCs, tablets, charging accessories, tech hubs and connected devices, while home organisation products can help families create more structured study spaces as children return to their routines.

“Back-to-school is one of the most important preparation periods of the year for families across the UAE,” says Jim Liu, General Manager for the Middle Eastern markets at AliExpress. “They’re investing in technology, home essentials, and everyday products that help simplify busy routines and support learning throughout the year.”

Preparing students for a more technology-led future

The changing shopping habits also reflect a larger transformation taking place within education.

As AI literacy and technology become increasingly relevant to students, parents are considering how technology can complement classroom learning. Digital devices can provide access to educational resources, support research and enable students to develop familiarity with tools that are likely to become increasingly important in higher education and the workplace.

The challenge, however, is not simply having more technology at home. Creating an environment where technology supports focused learning, rather than distraction, is becoming equally important.

A well-organised study area, reliable connectivity and appropriate devices can help students establish routines that balance digital learning with reading, writing, physical activity and offline study.

The back-to-school season is therefore becoming less about a single shopping list and more about preparing the household for a new academic routine.

For parents, that can mean reorganising spaces at home, reviewing children’s technology needs and establishing routines that accommodate both schoolwork and extracurricular activities.

AliExpress is also using its seasonal campaign to highlight products from recognised brands through its Brand+ offering, including names such as ASICS, Realme, eufy and HiBREW.

Its Back-to-School Sale runs from August 17 to 26, covering technology, home, lifestyle, sports and other categories.

As the UAE’s education system continues to evolve, the definition of being “ready for school” is evolving with it. The modern school year increasingly begins not just with a new timetable and school bag, but with the digital, physical and home environment that supports how students learn.
